Lachie's Surgery

One Year Old!!!

Lachie had grommets put in with his first surgery (for his lip) but they fell out almost immediately so a second set were inserted with his second (palate) surgery also. He has to wear ear plugs and this blue ear wrap whenever in the water. It looks like a do-rag! My boy's a trendsetter....

A small gap was left behind his gum line in his second (palate) surgery as there wasn't enough tissue to close the palate completely. The surgeons did hope this would heal on its own, but it doesn't appear to be. That's food coming out of his nose (apart from the vege face mask). We have an appointment to see the surgeons again and discuss the action plan now. This may mean surgery sooner rather than later, as the food and drink in his nose seems to bother Lachlan (well... DUH!)

Lachlan's nose still has a little slant, but there are options available for surgery to rectify this in the future. His nostril is also collapsing which will also be fixed.

Stiches have come out!

Stiches came out today... Still very red, the scar will continue to fade. The stents should continue to improve the nostril shape. The wound runs up to his nose and horizontal under his left nostril. The redness under his nose is just irritation from the dressing.

Post-surgery pics

Stiches come out tomorrow, so I'll post some more photos then! I've been trying to get him to smile, but he stops as soon as the camera comes out. It's very cute, still a little lopsided so he looks very cheeky!

The dressing on his nose is to keep the nasal stents in. They're like little straws in his nose to make a nice shape. He gets a free nose job when he's older if he doesn't like it! Sweet!

Back at home, swelling has come down. The things on his arms are arm splints to stop him from putting things in his mouth and tearing the wound.

Day after surgery... more swelling!

Lachie is just waking up from the general anesthetic. He's pretty swollen.

Pre-Surgery Pics

2 1/2 months old
He has his orthodontic plate in, this helps to close the cleft in his gum, brings his lip line together and later they added a nasal stent to help form the nostril shape. The tape on his face is to hold it in his mouth. This all helps to prepare for a better result from surgery.

2 weeks old
Lachie is wearing his Pavlic harness to correct displacia of the hips... translation... He had dislocating hips. All better now!

3 1/2 months old
Still got frogs' legs from the harness... If you look closely you can see the stent in his nose. His nostril shape looks better.

5 1/2 months old... Lachie loves to chew on his feet! Maybe we need leg splints as well as arm splints to keep things out of his mouth post surgery!
